THE WORM.
- a texture project
- INITIAL EXPLORATION -
This is the initial exploration for substance designer for creating materials, specifically for synthetic materials. For the materials made, i decided to create textures of a control panel, wooden surface, and magma.
To create the magma and wood materials, i combined nodes that i learned in class with different tutorials to create these textures. One of the most important nodes that I learned to use is histogram scan, allowing me to control different sections and create masks. This allowed me to create the control panel texture, with is a lot of stacking shapes and patterns with masks.
- Synthetic Materials -
The initial concept stems from the science fair displays in the game Portal, and i wanted to create something similar, where a simple science fair project gone wrong. As i knew the following project is about organic materials, i have decided to combine the scenes of both projects, with the first one focusing on the synthetic materials, and the second on organics.
The 6 main textures are the different materials present on the gun, focusing on a variety of metals, wood, carbon fiber, plaster, and the polymer grip. There are two versions of each material, one is of the original, and one is altered. The altered version of the gun has wear and tear for parts that exposed to the elements, the gun barrel is heat treated, copper wires that are meating and glowing, and cracks in paint on the plastics and carbon fiber.
- Organic Materials -
The concept is a continuation of the previous, focusing on the part narratively that goes terribly wrong, where the science fair experiment grows way out of hand, with meat pores, exposed worms, and blood all over the place.
The 6 organic materials created are the teeth, beetle shell, earthworm body, steak, gross stomach meat pores, and blood. For the original materials, i focused on making the scene look more fresh, as if this outbreak just happened, with the worms still succulent and iridescent shell. For the altered version, i wanted to create a more abandoned scene, the meat pores are growing white mold, maggots on the dried steak, rotten teeth, dried earthworm, petrified bug shell, and finally dried blood.
Most of the materials are all done in substance designer, with the most of the altered versions done by adding different texturing within substance painter. However, most of these altered materals also had additional designer material work done to match the references.
